General Meeting
Many new faces this time around. We had some lively discussions on various topics. And one fellow talked about his Wireless ISP business for boating marinas in Southern California.
A couple of IT folks from Cal Tech were here to talk about their various projects and concepts how wireless may help with the parking problems on campus.
We also started some discussion on wireless in the Los Angeles tele-commuter and car-culture. We are married to our cars and many of us spend at least 2 hours a day in the car. What benefits could an always-on network bring to the driver? (Keywords: Telematics, Infofueling)
One topic kept coming up throughout the meeting: How can one perform a site survey? Mostly this was in the form of tracking signal strength while walking around the deployment environment. Of course, the excellent, easily attainable, Network Stumbler (aka Netstumbler) was brought up. The new audio signal strength (it beeps!) was demonstrated. And the high-end AirMagnet wireless analyzer was discussed, too.
Commercial Wireless Project Alert: Kevin Mulvihill from a local homeowners association has requested information regarding a neighborhood co-operative wireless ISP in the Sylmar area. He gave his contact information and requested that interested parties contact him directly regarding this project. He prefers that you email him as he will send out an RFP by email in the near future.
